When the call to increase technology in Africa was made, one charity decided to step up to the game and bat 1,000. The charity has, to date, shipped over 50,000 personal computers for students to use and study on. The Irish-based charity, Camara, which takes old computers and refurbishes them for use in Africa, has shipped itai??i??s 50,000th computer to the country in hopes of bringing technology and skills necessary to the people of Zambia to compete in a modern world.
With over 2,500 learning centers up and running all over the world and with a staff of trained teachers number 12,000 and growing, Camara is set to make a huge dent and impact into the disparity that disadvantaged communities the world over experience through the introduction of the donated computers in the learning centers.
Currently, the charity is up in arms over the fact that over 1,500 PCs are refurbished and ready to go but are facing a serious shortage of monitors and screens to bundle the PCs with. Without the monitors to display the content provided by the PCs, the charitable learning packages cannot be shipped. Camara is calling on any and all sources of monitor donations by the public at large. The dearth of donated monitors is due to their life span in comparison to hard disks and other computer equipment. Camara hopes that by attracting the attention of the world that donations of unused monitors will help get the program back on track.
